Behind the Curtain (2017, Dynamo Art Association)
Alina Senchenko and Bára Hladíková’s collaborative project sustains a conversation around placelessness and longing that maps a shared relationship to the ‘old country’. 'Behind the Curtain' highlights the artists embodied experiences through an amalgam of mediums including sound, photography, and writing.
While the Soviet regime fell twenty-five years ago, it is still unclear what is behind the Iron Curtain. Senchenko and Hladíková draw on their own diasporic narratives, as a first-generation Czech/Roma woman raised in Canada and a born-and-raised Ukrainian woman now living in Canada, to map the depths and complexities of an often misunderstood society.
